KROOKED TYPE MASTER CLASS FOR ADDIDAS WE ARE ORIGINALS

So once again I got the opportunity to work with Addidas and Krooked Type for their We Are Originals campaign. This time around I got to do my very own solo piece, under the super vision of MASER, Albert Hooi and Fraher, the current members of Krooked Type. The piece I had submitted was one of the two of my 'Equations' pieces, posted a few months back, and after having altered it to give it more of a vibrant Addidas feel I decided I wanted to give a completely twist for this campaign. Since I thoroughly enjoy set building and making crafty little things with my hands, I put some perspective into the piece. Literally. It was a huge challenge as we had only three days to complete the piece. After the three days I managed to create what you see above. Three days after it's compleation forty-eight billboards of my piece were put up all over Ireland for Champion Sport. Such an exciting project and certainly one that strengthen my love and confidence in 3D pieces. Thanks to Krooked Type for their confidence an support. Final photography by Albert Hooi.

Sober industries is the collaboration of two graphic artist, Tim Boin and Basto Elbers. Eienwijs Produkties is the union of two DJs, Timo Van Muiswinkel and Sjoerd Post. The music and artistic event that was AANWEZIG was their mastermind collaboration to give Rotterdam a party like no other. With over 15 DJ's spinning the decks and over eight artist painting live, it certainly was a party never to be forgotten. Here's a rough idea of what went on from my perspective. Maatschappij Voor Volksgeluk is one of Rotterdam's most prominent party organisers. From movie nights parties, to warehouse parties, to art exhibitions and intimate dinners, MAVV has become a word to get excited about for the past year. They have held parties in association with Rotterdam's Witte de With festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, as well as just having a party for the sake of having a party and giving the people of Rotterdam a place to have some good clean fun! This particular party, Studio Paneik, was linked to the Witte de With festival of summer 2010. It took place in an old dance studio just off Witte of the With and was in my opinion one of the best parties of the whole festival. 2010 Mysteryland's had asked Uit Je Doek! to create a mini-festival within their already massive festival. Having done an amazing job at Solar festival 2010 they collaborated once more with Sober Industries to make Club Mad. The mini festival was all about performances, creativity and a bit of silliness in the midst of the festivals music and partying. This was my contribution to the mini festival. And this is what came of it...3D lettering constructed from box card and painted with acrylic and Indian ink. My intention was to make warped letterforms which would then be abstracted with the painted random pattern. To creating a more dynamic feel, each letter was hung askew and in different angles and heights, they were then photographed from different points of view within a specially constructed stage. With a dark setting the letters, which actually make up the word MADE, were once again subverted into a even more abstract state. The stage was a high gloss black, which meant reflections from the lettering could be picked up in photograph, this then added another element of depth to the composition. Colour was introduced by the means of colourful paper boxes and triangular confetti. Both of these were arranged meticulously, carefully noting the reflective element of the setting, to give a certain flow to the piece.

This piece was especially created for MADE YOU THINK magazine. A publication celebrating the work of 50 independent artist all over The Netherlands in the space of 50 pages. From Photographers, to illustrators to designers, each person will get a single page to show their piece. Out of the 50 artist there will be 20 people picked to exhibit in TrouwAmsterdam in Mid May 2010.

Grafik Armor, makers of high quality snowboard decal wraps along with Forsnowboarding have launched their first ever design competition. My design submission was inspired by previous piece below, which in itself was a vector challenge. Being a huge fan of pattern sketching, I have always been annoyed by the fact that I could never be arsed to replicate my drawings to vector format, which for me would be a more exciting format and one that could be easily manipulated. WHEN YOU JUST CAN'T BE YOURSELF

An illustration I had made a few months back that was neglected and forgotten. Initially black in on cartridge paper, then taken to the digital level. Coloured and certain patterns were added in photoshop and illustrator. It feels a little more lively, yet still to be used for something more appropriate.

All throughout my early teenage years I painted like a demon. It was my entertainment, my love and my passion. As I grew older and I began to paint less and less. I allowed so many other different distraction and activities pull me away. So for Christmas 2009 I decide to revive my love for painting. This series was created for my wonderful Mother [and equally wonderful Father], to be hung in their new apartment.

After much deliberation and furious collaborations the metrodc stationary and identity has been finalised and sent to print. The design for the logo was previously created by head honcho Robert Kerssing a few months back, while the letterheading was designed by Pieter van der Beek and the rest by myself under cool handed and gentle direction of Joost Van Gorsel and Jacco Bakker. And so after ridiculous amounts of design variations, it has finally come together. In some cases one could say too many cooks spoil the broth but in this case, enough cooks and plenty of time makes for a tasty result. Phew.

Pattern play, and attempt to find a suitable pattern for metrodc to incorporate in their identity, website and stationary. Thriving Dutch online fashion magazine Iconique, is one of Holland's biggest fashion website. With it's dark and über modern style, the Iconique brand, founded and directed by Joost Van Gorsel, required a business card design that reflected the contemporary pizazz that the site so strongly upholds. With a hint of influence by Alexy Brodovich and Man Ray, the concept created was edgy and sharp. The faceted shapes, dark gradient overtones, and diamond pattern uv spot print was then softened with the use of clean modern type.

There's almost a Twilight Zone twice a day in the company of the grand-father clock that sits tall, ancient and proud in the half-lit hallway. So it goes...from 11.30 whether it be night or day, grand-daddy will announce the every half hour AND hour with just the one chime until the moment when the world is at the 2 o'clock mark. Two hours of not knowing exactly where in the world you are [time wise] one remains in this state until they're set free by that lagging chime.

These are photographs taken at the stairwell of the Creative Cube building on Delftstraat in Rotterdam, home to Metrodc. Since I began working there, I've happily climbed up and down these stairways basked in the transparent coloured light that's given off by the brightly tinted windows. The tile work and brick patterns, broken up by the strong black rails create exciting compositions in a bright and sunny day. Beams of light and misfit shadows fall and slant on calculated grids and patterns. Delicious bliss!

To rediscover the wonders of drawing is nothing of fantastic. So when I began a journey of play with ink and mental wanderings it took me quite a while to flow into it. And in this illustration it is quite evident. Conflicting shapes patterns and composition of such elements push and pull at each other to form a krooked collage of my journey.

Smoking for me is resembles a nice relaxing tea ceremony. I began rolling tobacco when I first moved to New Zealand. There the really know how to smoke rolled tobacco. And thanks to my awesome mentors Miss Brooke Clode and Miss Lisa Elliott, best kiwi flatmates, I reckon I have become my own pro at it. Then there came a stage where I shared every smoke I rolled with a dear soul and the meaning of this process changed for me. This is actually the second of a two part series of smoking illustrations. Since then smoking a cigarette has once again became a solitary affair for me. This was drawn during that transitional period.

Designs based on the Henry David Thoreau quote "Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves." The concept for this design was of nine to five type employees being churned day in and day out like toy coming down a factory conveyor belt. The main focus is on the repetition of such characters and their mechanical and cold tired exteriors. Several treatments were applied as printing methods were still to be decided upon. Final result [first two] was a two coloured print on either black or white t-shirts. This made for a stronger cleaner graphical image that spoke louder than the quote itself.

FOR THE LOVE OF FLAX

Flax flowers picked by a good friend after a sunny day at free one day music festival on Whaitangi Day in New Zealand. To wake up and find these glorious flowers propped against your living room wall in such a poetic manner is nothing short of wonderful. Various lights were placed around them to accentuate the magnificent shadows they create with their talon like pods and their unruly short branches. When another flatmate threw them out they were retrieved from the garbage quick smart and strong words dished out for even threatening such a travesty. They may be dead but they are still so beautiful!

Wedgewood.com is an online company who sells stained hard wood panels that effectively sound proof rooms. A logo was needed to accompany the new website which aims to will show the panels being used in situations that are not specifically related to music. Having and aesthetic feel to the panels themselves I incorporated it into the design of the logo. In keeping with the classy, expensive, and high-end style the logo is sharp modern and versitile.

The design proposals and and logo development for American west-coast long boarding company required a clean and minimalistic approach. Logos were rendered in grey to give a neutral no no fuss appearance. Other colour options were proposed but grey was the colour of choice for these experiments. With the requires image to accompany the type, greater emphasis was then put on the typography and the treatment used to portray the company's cool and basic style.

Brochure to promote Howard Rosenthal Photography studios to advertising agencies. The design called for a strong eye-catching composition to grab attention of such agencies. Images were given from the photography studio website and manipulation of imagery to create the brochure was applied. Soft gradients were used to compliment the sharpness of high fashion photographs, and graphic elements were thrown in to create a balance within the composition. Two different format options were included to sho the versitility of the style of the layout.

Going under a new collaborative name of Dark Kightz they were looking for a clean professional logo to be used on flyers, posters, and websites. Having over 15 years of djing experience inluding former dj residencies at Ministry of Sound Nightclub the wanted a logo that was instantly regognised and club culture orientated. Emphasis on type and form were made on the design, creating a look that's crisp and instantly associated with the duo.

Several proposal for Print America re-working of logo. First ideas makes use of CMYK colours, overlays and geometric shapes in a simplistic manner. Second set of shapes to be used in the logo were derived from the type used. Being as this concept was more type orientated the formations of the shapes used were set to almost grid formation to counteract the treatments used in the logo a in it's entirety.

Custom designed promotional Lambaretta moped for Adidas 'We are Originals' advertising campaign. Commissioned by The Hive advertising agency and in collaboration with Dublin street artist Maser, we were given a Lambaretta moped to strip down and re-design. Based loosely on the graphics for Adidas campaign we created a striking design which reflected the feel of the mod era and also incorporated Adidas' signature zig-zaged three stripe design. Yet having no real Adidas branding on the moped meant that we could focus more on the originality of the design allowing us to showcase the collaboration with a Maser piece on one of the side pannels.

A personal project of fourteen postcards with line of a sonnet on each design, written for a loved one. The sonnet postcard is a modern adaptation of old love letters sent during war times. Invite for the White Sony PSP Fashion Show at Urban Outfitters. Inspiration taken from 1960's monochrome and the Rorschach inkblot tests.The idea of the abstract inkblot designs analyzed the measure of emotional, intellectual functioning and integration, which also tied in with the concept of the personal playstation. The motif is also indicative of the images we see in today's fashion magazines.

Promotional front window display for the White Sony PSP at Urban Outfitters. Designed and constructed with street artist Maser. Black and White was the theme of the Fashion show which linked the promotion with the store. Clothing had a monochromatic vintage twist mixing current trends with the old. Make-up was also inspired by the design of the window back-drop and invitations. Back-drop was constructed from canvas and acrylic paint.

Special limited edition Maser Black Sony PSP exhibited in front window of clothing store Tribe, in St. Stephens Green Shopping Center, Dublin. Full window display was designed and constructed to showcase the PSP. One hundred consoles were made and auctioned off for charity.

Mock up for book design for 'Invisible' Visible Illusion Book. Case, slip cover and book design was based on the theme of illusion. Theories and methods linked with the visual process, perception and the basic forms of illusion were explored to compile a concertina book. Derived from my initial fascination with sight and the tricks it can play with our minds, the book is a tactile result of my study of such subjects as the optical process, perception and the illusive nature of our most trusted sense. Minimal and simplistically styled the book is designed so as not to effect the viewer impression or opinion. The palette, type, illustrations and even the format of the book was chosen carefully in consideration of the subject matter.

Herzog & de Meuron's Prada Building, Tokyo.
Magazine layout design for an article case studying the flagship Prada building in Tokyo, Japan, designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The layout encompasses the theory, structure and colours of the Prada building as well as incorporating the Prada concept. A 3D structure was constructed, photographed and manipulated for the cover design. It captures the essence of the buildings structural form and mimics the edifices abstract formation.

SOUND & MOTION PIECE: THE TROUT

A short experimental sound and motion piece created by taking a snippet of a classical music and putting a visual interpretation to it. Through investigative work, mark makings and playing with geometrical composits the piece was then storyboarded and then created through Adobe After Effects then rendered as a QuickTime movie. CD lable and case was then designed to coincide with the piece and to generally reflect the theme and colours of the movie.
